Can someone please comment at length on the collapse of Australia this morning?
It seems to me that they attempted to hit their way out of a crisis playing the 'aussie' way and came unstuck badly. if this is their tactic for next summer, they may well end up losing the ashes as it is predicable, over-confident and disrespectful of the opposition. They haven't quite woken up to the fact that the rest of the world are much closer to them than in the past even if they remain very good in many way and are not a push-over.
What does anyone else think?...other than the fact it is too soon to talk about the Ashes. Anyway, the India series against us could be very good.

All I can think of as I watch this test unfold is that we're more than likely to get a right shoeing when we come up against the Indians in Omigoditsbad and Guwheretheytellme (copyright Gideon Haigh).
Looking towards when we meet the Australians next, their bowling unit will not look as one-dimensional next year, not least of which because the ECB are ensuring we avoid playing at the grounds that offer any "English conditions" (see bitches and moans passim).
And their batting will, for some time to come, be an exceedingly good unit.
Saying that, Clarke's dismissal to the googly and Hayden's capitualtion against Singh were both very amusing to watch; especially after Watson mouthed off about chasing down any score. Nice one, Shane - that didn't set Gambhir and Sehwag off TOO fast, did it?
I have to concur with your opinion, KendalPinDick, that a mullering of unpleasant proportions awaits in in the smoggy backwaters of industrial India.
With regards to Kris' comments about the choice of grounds against the aussies, and relating Pat's theory about packing the side with spinners against south africa this summer, does anyone know if Rashid has a googly?
Rashid has a googly.
It is bowled at 42 mph though...
Well at least that indicates he's able to move his arm through the air at different speeds - a biological characteristic that seems to have bypassed Monty Panesar.
Rashid's googy has done for quite a few county players this season (although I acknowledge that's no indication of quality in itself).
Let's be clear - Rashid is not up to bowling on the Test stage just yet but this conversation will crop up with greater urgency in another 12 months or so.
What's he doing this winter? Is he playing schools cricket in Australia where they swear at him and punch him all day to make him into a man and improve his cricket brain?
Pat, are you worried that he's bowling it too fast?
The problem isn't so much whether he's bowling it too fast or too slow but that he's bowling it at a different speed to his standard leggie, therefore making it easier to pick.
thanks terry jenner
Multi-tasking the education of a future Britain with bitchy asides on unread cricket blogs, eh?
You're a beacon in the darkness of my training, Mr J.
Yeah, I wrote that one whilst actually reading out a year 2 sats question to the class.
I'm a fucking genius.
By the way, I hope you're right about this being unread, otherwise I'm liable to get sacked.
Apparently he bowls far too slowly generally and can't get about 50. That's what I've heard anyway. He seems like a pretty decent cricketer though and could probably bat at 7.5 for England.
Why can't monty bowl at anything other than 56mph? It is a great worry to me. Chappell got it right unfortunately: every single ball is a beautiful exhibition of left-arm spin; but if you do the same thing every time it isn't particular effective. Also, I don't think that Monty bowls well to the outfield. He is aiming for bwl, lbw or caught at first slip or silly mid off all the time. This is evidenced by the fact that he isn't allowed to set his own fields.
Also, I don't want that ginger twat sidebottom playing for England again. I don't know why: i just don't...
Is he ghing-gwar? Maybe after a heavy application of sun-in.
its late, so i will be brief (bloody jetlag).
there's an article on cricinfo about monty. apparently he doesn't care what his field is - that's why Vaughn always did it. i think that criticism may be working, because he's gone off to sl to prepare. that said, and correct me if i'm wrong (pat) but hasn't he been bowling on pretty unhelpful wickets (i.e. england); he's never been taken to the cleaners; and always bowls ok to good (i.e. never badly). i think the india tour will tell how good he currently is. and lets not forget that he's doing better than vitorri was at this stage, and who is good (but when is he going to graduate?) but i do agree (pat) that he does need to do a bit of developing.
also, i think the two tests so far have shown - in their twisty-turnyness - how far superior test cricket is to any other form of the game; especially the one-dimensional 20-20.
Hear hear- to paraphrase a great writer (king cricket) one dayers are good, 20/20 can be a lot of fun but test cricket represents the pinnacle of human achievement.
