India v Australia

I'm very much looking forward to reading about the India v Australia test series which starts tomorrow morning. The Aussies are going in with Watson at 6, Cameron White at 8, with Lee at 9, apparently. Are three front line bowlers and no proper spinner enough? Surely they can't be going for the draw? I'd like to think that they are for the sake of argument.

I was looking forward to jason krejza playing. Ponting:

"One positive coming from that game was I could hear all this yelling and screaming coming from the background and it was Jason on the boundary,"

Ponting said:

"He was really disappointed not to get another bowl. For me that was a good sign."

Does this mean that he's no good, but his attitude reflects enough Aussie sporting cliches for Ponting to want to select him....PLEASE let him play in next year's Ashes...

Kris, like racing green more than lime green...

This green highlights the writing better, though - all tended to get lost on the racing green, I found.

If I find time soon, I'll have another play around with it all.

I am also looking forward to this series. India have a better balance to their bowling attack, for sure - however, I think the Aussie batting line-up just brings it back to neck 'n' neck.

Only wish that a) I had Sky and b) I had lots of spare time and energy to devote to sitting around all night watching the game.

Guardian and Times online will just have to do.

Kris, i do have 'the cricket channel', but unfortunately no spare time. However, i have been watching the first day all morning. there was i thinking that my bunking-off-to-watch-cricket days were over. after all, england homes games start at 6pm. anyway, my comments so far:

1) Excellent first over: Hayden is a cunt;
2) Sharma's bouffant is troubling;
3) Ponting looks like Ian Hislop;
4) I watched the warm up game, and Krejza is truly awful, it was just as well they left him out;
5) Have the Aussie selectors gone all English? (i) White picked but but wasn't in original squad... (ii) Siddle (who is also rubbish) was picked over Noffke, even though the latter was the leading wicket-taker in Aus domestic cricket last year and is classified as as an allrounder now;
6) Mr Cricket is a reasonable character, which annoyed me.

I think Ben has hit upon the important thing. Until I turned on the telly, I too thought the major issue in this series was the lack of aussie spin attack (total test wickets for Kumble, Harbajan and sewhag- 932, total test wickets for current aussie spinners- 16, all to Michael Clarke), whereas in fact the real issue is sharma's hair. Surely one of the senior players could have put an arm around his shoulders and told him.

Right, so, if we can get Ponting and Hussey out early we win the ashes. If we don't we...ummm...draw...

Does the fact that Mike Hussey is clearly not a twat in fact make him a twat.

Bizarrely, the second comment seems to be a sounder judgment than the first.

Hattie Jacques, Ponting, Katich, Hussey, Clarke, Ponting (he counts twice because he's so good), Symonds (when they recall him, which they will)

That batting line up will fuck us up, I fear.

Could be Ashes '90 all over again.

I agree.

650+ up batting first, and then just watch the pressure build...

Having wasted the weekend watching the game. I am left pondering:
1) How good is Harbhajan Singh? I think that he probably has to be ranked quite high on current rankings, especially since he seems to rile the aussies so much.
2)How will we get Hussey out? This, I believe, is key to our ashes success, because the rest do seem fallible(but clearly good - but then so are our bowlers).
3) The aussie bowling is not a problem. Unlike before, they cannot attack once the ball is old. They do not appear to have mastery of reverse swing. This makes our openers key - bring back Tresco?
4) has anyone considered how we are to fair against the Indians? I've dedicated so much of my brain to making disparaging comments about hayden, i haven't given it due consideration. I do think that 2 tests is not enough. And i would like to see monty and rashed bowling in tandem.
4) Having watched so much Indian tv, because it hosts the test matches, I now know a very small number of Hindi words. At least more than I known in Danish.

In terms of both the indians and the aussies, I think it again comes down to the mental frailties of our batsmen. I think our bowling generally is a bit better than both of those attacks, esp. if Kumble is crocked, but our batting is obviously inferior to both, but the key thing is NOT BY MUCH. If they can keep some semblance of of calm and they are thinking about the needs of the team rather than their own personal battles with their many and varied demons, then there is no reason why we can't at least beat India and draw with the aussies. The fact that we only have two tests against india, however, is just too ridiculous for words.
